In this first-of-its-kind collection of photographs, eighteen victim-survivors of sexual abuse tell their stories of trauma and recovery through the lens of documentary photographer, Dan Heller. Guided by subjects’ personal visions, aspirations, and imaginations, Heller collaborates with each person to create images, expressing triumphs over turmoil and self-doubt to reclaim a sense of power, purpose, clarity, and meaning. Each image illuminates a journey of struggle and hope, revealing intimate moments when subjects restore agency over personal narratives and physical space. As a collection, these compelling and sometimes surprising portraits present a tableau of strength and courage, one which offers its own possibilities for inspiration, growth, and healing.
